  • Aniline vs Semi-Aniline Leather: Which Should You Choose?

    July 27, 2026 1 min read

Aniline is dyed through with no surface coating — the most natural look and feel, but it absorbs spills and sunlight fast. Semi-aniline adds a thin protective finish that preserves natural grain and subtle texture while resisting stains and fading. For most South African homes — sun, kids, dogs — semi-aniline is the practical choice; aniline rewards a formal room away from harsh light.

    The trade-offs

    • Feel: aniline is softest; semi-aniline is very close.
    • Sun: South African UV fades aniline noticeably faster — keep it off north-facing window walls; semi-aniline holds colour far longer.
    • Spills: aniline drinks them; semi-aniline gives you time to wipe.
    • Ageing: aniline develops deep patina; semi-aniline stays uniform.
