Africa has given us some of the greatest interiors and design moments, and the large, diverse continent has long been inspiring artists and designers with its bold graphics, strong silhouettes and exquisite craftsmanship. In 2021, as the clean edges of ubiquitous minimal design make way for more organic shapes and bolder colours, African accents are going to be making their way into more to homes. Let’s cast an eye over some of the key elements of this trend and explore some ways to incorporate accents of this effortlessly luxe – but never at the expense of comfort – style.
The fashion world is no stranger to animal prints, so it’s no surprise that safari-inspired patterns are popping up everywhere in home decor, too. Zebra print rugs and leopard pillows are no longer just for the design risk takers.
The classic earthy and vibrant colours of African décor style begin with the ochre accent wall and carries through to the various tones of terracotta, earthy brown, deep gold and burnt oranges. Black and white in both strong geometric and organic forms are also commonly found in classic African interiors, and work together here alongside all the other hallmarks of African décor style; natural fibres, wood and linen.
These patterns become much easier to bring into a space once you start thinking of them as neutrals that can work with just about anything. Don’t be afraid to mix an animal print in with other colours and patterns. A zebra print fabric, for example, can be perfectly paired with a bright floral.
You don't have to commit to a lot of animal print to still make a big statement. (In fact, showing restraint in design can be a really good thing.) Bringing in small doses on a pillow, a throw, or even a tray can be just enough.
It’s true: More than one animal can be in a room and still get along. The trick to using more than one animal print (or any other print, for that matter) is to vary the scale of the patterns. A larger zebra print on the floor, for example, doesn’t compete with a smaller-scale cheetah print pillow.
If you’re toying with the idea, but aren’t sure how safari-inspired decor would work in your home, scatter cushions are a great way to ease into the trend. They’re low cost and low commitment; there are some beautiful pillow covers and shams that won’t cost you a fortune.
On the other hand,...if you’re feeling brave, animal prints can make a huge statement on the wall (or on the ceiling, or on the floor). If you’re ready to fully embrace the trend, consider using an animal print wallpaper or fabric for couch upholstery. These patterns command attention and can create a bold entryway, powder room, or even kitchen—if you’re up for it.
The beauty of African style décor is that it is a trend wide open to interpretation – there are just so many ways to incorporate it with your personal style. If you are drawn to ultra-glam interiors, hunt out the more ornate pieces that feature beadwork. . If you fancy a more rugged look, pair white walls with plenty of natural fibres and timbers. Finally, if your idea of interiors bliss is inspired by the romance and wanderlust of the safari, billowing white curtains, natural finishes and plenty of butterfly chairs and cushions are for you; all in an earthy palette.
