HOW TO FIND QUALITY WOODEN FURNITURE
A wooden coffee tableor accent table is a beautiful, classic furniture piece that perfectly completes any living room style, regardless if your style is mid-century modern, eclectic or glam. Wooden living room furniture is not only versatile in terms of style and design, it also offers a level of functionality that is often missing from most living rooms by adding a larger surface space where you can store and display a multitude of items. The downside to purchasing a wooden coffee table is that if you do not do your own research beforehand, you could potentially spend a lot of money on a poor-quality wooden coffee table.

RESEARCH THE CONSTRUCTION AND COMPOSITION OF THE COFFEE TABLE

Wooden coffee tables are a great investment piece for your lounge after your lounge suite, so it is important to ensure that the construction of your coffee table is strong and reliable. Coffee tablesthat have slim, skinny legs look great but might not be as sturdy as a coffee table with thicker, solid legs or a solid base. When you are looking at wooden coffee tables for your lounge another factor to consider is the strength of the coffee table when it has numerous things placed on top of it putting pressure on it. If you hear creaks or cracks it is best to avoid buying that particular coffee table as it might not be of the best quality.

CHECK THE FINISH OF THE WOOD

The finish of any wooden furniture is a vital component to how it will look and last in the years to come. If the wooden coffee table has a bad finish on it, then it will start to ware in certain places over time, resulting in staining, damage and splitting.

TYPES OF WOOD

You do not have to be an expert on wood when buying wooden furniture, all you need to know is that there are different variations of natural wood that each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Hardwood and softwood are the most common wood types used in the manufacturing of wood furniture, but more frequently manufactured woods are starting to be used as they are more cost-effective to use than natural woods.

HARDWOOD VS SOFTWOOD

There are two main types of wood that are used to manufacture wooden furniture, hardwood and softwood. Softwood is a much more affordable compared to hardwood, while hardwood is more elegant and of a higher status and therefore comes with a higher price tag.  Each wood type has its own positives and negatives, it depends on what you want the wooden furniture item for, where it will be displayed, as well as your budget.

SOFTWOODS

PINE
Pine is a stiff wood and has a more rustic feel which makes it easier to work with. Pine is more durable and stronger, making it ideal for crafting furniture. Pine wood contains numerous knots, swirls and colour variations giving it lots of character.

FIR
Fir wood is very similar to pine wood, but it has less visible knots and markings. Fir wood is also much stronger, making it extremely durable. While it may be strong and durable, it is still relatively cheap. Fir wood furniture is a great alternative if you are looking for wooden furniture that is strong and sturdy but still affordable.

HARDWOODS

OAK
Oak wood is the most preferred type of wood in furniture making as well as in flooring and cabinetry as it is characteristically known for its durability, workability, and natural beauty. Oak wood comes in red, white, and blue, however red oak wood is most common.

WALNUT
Walnut is a straight-grained hardwood that features a distinctive rich chocolate colour. Walnut wood is more commonly used in furniture that needs to be carved. Walnut is a high-quality wood and carries a much higher price tag compared to other hardwoods due to its extreme durability and strength.

MANUFACTURED WOODS

While natural wood is always best for wooden furniture, there are times when your budget does not afford it. Manufactured wood has become increasingly popular over the years due to it being lightweight and extremely cheap. However, with it being cheaper you do lose out on the quality compared to natural woods. Manufactured woods might appear to look like natural woods from afar or when you briefly look at them but on closer inspection you will see that the patterns or apparent imperfections are manufactured and not real.
