The best ways to take care of your rug

The festivities have ended and the guests are gone but the cleaning remains. Although we may not realise it, our rugs are one of the most used items in our homes, they are like clothes for your floors. As we all know clothing should be cleaned thoroughly and regularly to ensure that they are well maintained. The process of maintaining your rug may be tiresome and requires a lot of effort, so we’ve got some tips to help you make things easier.

Caring for your rug:

  • Vacuuming, dusting or sweeping your rug is a regular cleaning activity that is essential if you want to ensure that your rugs stay tidy. Doing these frequently prevents dust, dirt and food crumbs from settling into the base of the rug.
  • Ensure that sharp objects are placed away from your rug and ensure that your rug is not placed near a fireplace.
  • To prevent deterioration of your rug, keep large and heavy objects such as sofas, occasional chairs, heavy coffee tables, plasma units and shelves off of your rug.
  • Avoid exposing your rug to direct sunlight as it may result in colour fading.
  • If your rug is placed in areas that receive a lot of sunlight it must be turned or rotated often. Doing this helps to reduce the appearance of foot traffic patterns, as it evens them out. If you have furniture placed on your rug, alternating the position of the furniture regularly, aids in reducing or avoiding the impressions left on the rug.
  • Avoid using a rug in areas that are prone to dampness as this will damage your rug.
  • Do not fold your rug or put it in an airtight plastic bag or wrapping as this will prevent it from breathing. In addition to this folding your rug may cause cracks and creases in the rug. Always wrap your rug in a breathable, protective fabric.
  • If you are moving your rug the best way to keep it compact is to roll it and store it off of the ground, in a cool, dry space. When rolling up your rug keep it as straight as possible and roll the delicate side inward.
  • Do not walk on your rug with dirty feet or shoes on.
  • Keep your pets off of your rug. As gratifying as it is to have a pet, it is not the case your rug as pets can be messy and tend to chew on anything they can get their paws on. Therefore, it is best to keep them off of your rugs.

A new rug can brighten up your room and do wonders for your interiors. Rugs allow you to infuse your style and personality into your interiors and can trap allergens and filter the air around you, while also protecting your floors. However, it is important to remember that proper care and maintenance can keep your old rugs looking as good as new ones and increases their lifespan.
